Headteacher’s Blog #5 06/10/2017

  • Diary Dates for next week
    • Tuesday 10th 5.00 – 6.00 pm    Year 13 Parents’ Information Evening
    • Thursday 12th 5.00 – 6.00 pm  Year 8 Parents’ Information Evening

  • Last night we held our annual Year 6 Open Evening which was very well attended.  The student helpers were a tremendous credit to both themselves and the Academy.  The atmosphere was really positive; lots of visitors commented on the improvements which are happening.

  • As indicated on the website under Term Dates, the Academy is closed to students on 20 October and 3 January. The extra 3 training days we had in the first week of term were granted by the Department for Education for us to be able to ensure all members of staff received the training necessary for a new Trust.

  • Madeleine Thomas and Jemma Gilbert (both in Year 8) organised the Academy’s participation in the Macmillan Coffee Morning last Friday. A lot of hard work, time and effort was put in by students and their families with many very exceptional looking and tasting cakes being made for the cause.  A total of £98 was raised by the Academy – well done and thanks to everybody involved.

  • Years 11, 12 and 13 November exam timetables are available to view on the Downham Market Academy website under Exams Information. Individual timetables will be issued to students prior to the exams starting.

  • Thank you to everyone who attended the Year 11 Parents’ Information Evening on Tuesday.  Students have really risen to the challenge of Year 11 so far and it is great to see that they have so much support from home.  Please do look through the booklet provided on the evening (also available on the website under CET (Current Info) then the Year 11 tab) and set aside some time each week to support revision.

  • The Year 11 Study Skills Day is on 18 October and will be non-uniform for Year 11 students but they MUST be in smart clothes.

  • Last week 28 x Year 11 students successfully completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Assessed Expedition. The students walked for 3 days in the white peaks and camped overnight. A massive well done to all involved, it is an incredible achievement. The routes walked are not easy and the students were resilient to the challenges they had to contend with.

  • The U15 Netball team played The Nicholas Hamond Academy; they won one game 3-0; player of the match was Hannah Cant. They lost another game 9-2; player of the match was Sophie Porter.
