Headteacher’s Blog #16 12/01/2018

  • Diary Date for next week
    • Thursday 18 January Year 13 Parents’ Evening

  • We would like to welcome new members of staff to Downham Market Academy, all of whom joined us at the beginning of this year:
    • English   Mrs Carter        Mrs Geary     Ms Phillips      Ms Harper
    • Maths      Ms Chazama-Saunders
    • Science   Dr Hill      Mrs Anchor-Roberts
    • MFL         Mr Do Rosario Lopes        Ms Lamazares            Ms Provost
    • PE             Mr Marriott
    • Performing Arts       Miss Harris
    • SEN          Mrs Coulson

  • Attendance
    • Congratulations to Scott Ring who won the Year 11 draw and a £25 voucher for a meal at Nandos.  This was for having 100% attendance for the previous half term.
    • Whilst the vast majority of students attend school regularly, many have poor attendance. Far too many students have had 10 or more days absence so far this year.  This is not acceptable.  Attendance is so crucial to academic success as it means that young people have access to specialist teaching across a variety of subjects.  If attendance is not satisfactory, DMA uses formal approaches to improve it which may result in legal action being taken and large fines being issued by the magistrates’ court.

  • Thank you to everyone who supported their child at the Year 11 Parents’ Evening this week.  Things are looking very positive as we move into the last full term before the bulk of the GCSE exams start in May.

  • Year 8 Parents’ Evening will be held on Thursday 22 February.  Every student has been given a letter with details for parents/carers on how to login to the online booking system (parents-booking.co.uk/downhammarket).  Please book early to avoid disappointment as teachers’ schedules will become full.

  • Sixth Form
    • We welcome Ms Hornby, Director of Sixth Form, back from her maternity leave. Her priority is to see how we can build on what is already a good provision.  Don’t believe the rumours, we have no intention of closing the Sixth Form.
    • It has been very pleasing to discuss with the Year 13 students’ their mock grades, revision strategies and their plans beyond life at Downham Market Academy. We are very pleased with the number of offers the students are receiving from universities, including a large number of unconditional offers.
    • Students who are pursuing employment and apprenticeships attend twice weekly careers sessions which are currently focused on researching appropriate destinations and polishing CVs; this a highly successful programme.
    • Year 12 monitoring will take place in the coming weeks and tutorials will start to focus on work experience and extra-curricular activities.
